Hastings, NE – Critical fire weather conditions are impacting much of Nebraska May 11–12, with a Red Flag Warning in effect Monday and additional fire conditions expected into Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Hastings and North Platte, the current Red Flag Warning remains in place until 10 p.m. Monday, May 11, covering central, western, and north central Nebraska. A Fire Weather Watch has also been issued for Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening, signaling continued conditions.
Affected areas include Grand Island, Kearney, North Platte, and surrounding regions, along with the Sandhills and Loup Rivers Basin.
Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are expected Monday, combined with relative humidity levels dropping as low as 10 to 20 percent. Temperatures are climbing into the upper 80s and low 90s, further drying fuels.
On Tuesday, winds will shift northwest but remain strong, with similar gusts and humidity levels around 20 percent, maintaining elevated to near-critical fire conditions.
Officials warn that any fires that ignite could spread rapidly and become difficult to control. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could spark flames.
The combination of gusty winds, dry air, and warm temperatures significantly increases wildfire risk across Nebraska through Tuesday evening.
