Portage, WI – Rising water along the Wisconsin River could trigger sudden flooding within hours as pressure builds on a vulnerable levee in south central Wisconsin early Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday morning for Columbia and Sauk counties due to the potential failure of the Caledonia-Lewiston Levee. State officials warn that continued river rises, fueled by an additional 0.50 to 1.25 inches of rain—with isolated totals near 2.00 inches—could compromise the structure and release water quickly into surrounding lowlands.
Areas along the south and west sides of the river face the greatest risk, including Pine Island State Wildlife Area and stretches of Highway 33. Emergency managers note that if the levee gives way, water could move in rapidly, limiting evacuation time in flood-prone zones. Portage itself is not expected to be impacted by this specific scenario.
Drivers should avoid low-lying roads near the river, especially overnight through the early Sunday commute. Residents in vulnerable areas should prepare for quick action, charge devices, and monitor local alerts.
Warnings remain in place through Sunday morning as river levels continue to rise and additional advisories may follow.
