Chicago, IL – High waves and dangerous currents will keep Lake Michigan beaches in Chicago and northwest Indiana unsafe through Monday evening. Beachgoers should avoid swimming, as the National Weather Service warns of a high swim risk due to strong northwest winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Romeoville, sustained winds up to 15 mph, with gusts near 25 mph, are fueling hazardous surf along the lakefront. These conditions will create rip currents, especially near popular beaches in Chicago and Porter County, Indiana. Officials urge residents to stay out of the water and to avoid walking on piers or breakwalls.

Drivers using Lake Shore Drive in Chicago should also prepare for blowing spray near the shoreline. While skies will remain mostly sunny Monday with a high near 70, the surf danger outweighs the pleasant air temperatures. Monday night will clear out with calmer winds, but currents may linger into early Tuesday.

Looking ahead, conditions improve midweek with abundant sunshine and warming temperatures. By Wednesday and Thursday, highs will rise into the mid-70s under mostly sunny skies, creating safer outdoor conditions.

Residents planning beach trips later this week should wait until after Tuesday morning, when swimming risks ease. Until then, water safety should be the top priority.

Warnings remain in effect through Monday evening, with additional updates expected if lakefront winds strengthen.

Five Day Forecast for Chicago, IL
