New York, New York – Roads north and west of Interstate 84 could turn icy before the evening commute ends as freezing rain adds up to a tenth of an inch of glaze by 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. Tuesday for northern Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex and New London counties in Connecticut, western Passaic County in New Jersey, and Orange and Putnam counties in New York. Rockland and northern Westchester counties remain under an advisory until 7 p.m.

Snow and sleet will mix with freezing rain through the evening, producing up to 1 inch of additional accumulation along with ice. Higher elevations, especially north and west of I-84, could exceed one tenth of an inch of ice, increasing the risk of slick secondary roads and untreated bridges.

Communities including Danbury, Waterbury, Middletown, Milford, Newburgh and Carmel should expect hazardous travel during peak drive times. Even a light glaze can cause spinouts on ramps and overpasses.

Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check state DOT updates before traveling. Precipitation tapers later tonight, but patchy ice may linger where temperatures remain near freezing.
