Lyon Township, MI – A three-vehicle crash early New Year’s Day on Interstate 96 killed a Fenton woman and injured five others.
The crash occurred at 3:09 a.m. on westbound I-96 near the South Hill Road overpass. Authorities say a 2016 Ford Explorer rear-ended a stopped 2025 Chevrolet Trax in the second lane. The Trax had its hazard lights on.
After the initial collision, the Explorer veered into the next lane and collided head-on with a 2018 Jeep Compass. The impact left the 57-year-old Fenton woman, a rear passenger in the Explorer, dead at the scene.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, five others were hospitalized. An 82-year-old Fenton man remains in critical condition. The Trax driver and the Compass driver were also hospitalized, with alcohol potentially a factor.
The crash remains under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit.
Drivers are urged to stay alert and cautious, especially during holiday travel.
