Albuquerque, N.M. – Dangerous winds will roar back into New Mexico on Tuesday, with gusts as high as 60 mph expected in Ruidoso and widespread impacts likely across the state. The strongest winds will sweep through western and south-central areas, increasing the risk of rapid wildfire spread.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, sustained winds and peak gusts could begin building early Tuesday and intensify by midday. Most locations will see gusts between 35 and 45 mph, but high-end scenarios show potential for isolated 50–60 mph bursts in Ruidoso, Gallup, and areas east of Santa Fe, including Las Vegas and Red River.
Drivers on I-40 and I-25 may encounter hazardous crosswinds and blowing dust, especially in exposed areas. Loose outdoor items could become airborne, and residents are urged to secure property ahead of the event. Fire danger will be critical in areas with dry grass and low humidity, particularly in Lincoln and Catron counties.
With drier air moving in over the weekend and winds strengthening into midweek, fire crews and emergency officials are preparing for rapid ignition conditions.
Wind alerts could be issued as early as Monday. Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware and limit outdoor burning.
