Michigan — Ice is already clinging to trees and roadways in the Upper Peninsula, and conditions are turning more dangerous by the hour as freezing rain continues to build across Marquette.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, an Ice Storm Warning remains in effect with ice accumulation between one-tenth and four-tenths of an inch expected. Winds may gust up to 35 mph, increasing the risk of tree damage and scattered power outages.

Across Marquette, Gwinn, and L’Anse, roads including US-41 and M-28 are becoming slick, especially on bridges and untreated surfaces. Even minor ice buildup can quickly reduce traction, making travel hazardous through the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures hover near 32°F, creating a persistent freezing layer. Rain falling through this shallow cold air freezes on contact, coating vehicles, sidewalks, and power lines. Visibility may also fluctuate with patchy fog, adding another layer of concern for drivers.

Conditions may briefly ease before another round of wintry mix arrives heading into Saturday, including freezing rain and snow. While snowfall totals remain light, additional icing could compound impacts across the region.

Looking ahead, colder air settles in by Sunday with highs dropping into the 30s and 20s at night. Snow showers return early next week, reinforcing a winter-like pattern across northern Michigan.

Plan ahead if traveling today. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle and avoid unnecessary trips during peak icing. Power outages remain possible where ice accumulates most.
