Santa Fe, New Mexico – A sharp drop in temperatures is expected across New Mexico late Friday night, bringing a widespread freeze that could impact crops and infrastructure by early Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Freeze Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Saturday morning, with temperatures potentially falling into the low 20s across a large portion of the state. Areas impacted include Santa Fe, Española, Estancia Valley, and much of northeast and central New Mexico.
The coldest conditions are expected during the pre-dawn hours Saturday, when clear skies and light winds allow temperatures to fall rapidly. Agricultural areas and rural valleys are especially vulnerable, where early-season crops and vegetation may already be exposed.
In addition to crop damage, unprotected outdoor plumbing could freeze, and those without adequate shelter may face dangerous conditions.
Residents are urged to take precautions now by covering plants, insulating pipes, and ensuring pets and livestock are protected. Conditions are expected to improve after sunrise Saturday, but additional cold weather alerts could follow if the pattern continues.
