Amarillo, Texas – A late-season cold snap is expected to bring freezing temperatures back to the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, raising concerns for crop damage heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Freeze Watch remains in effect from late Friday night through Saturday morning, with temperatures potentially dropping as low as 29 degrees. Areas impacted include Amarillo, Dumas, Dalhart, Guymon, and Hereford, along with much of the surrounding High Plains region.
The coldest temperatures are expected during the pre-dawn hours Saturday, when calm winds and clear skies will allow rapid cooling. Agricultural areas across the region are especially vulnerable, as many crops have already begun early-season growth.
Even a brief period below freezing could damage or kill sensitive vegetation and pose a risk to unprotected outdoor plumbing. Rural communities and open areas may see slightly colder localized temperatures.
Residents and growers should prepare now by covering plants, protecting irrigation systems, and insulating exposed pipes. Conditions are expected to improve after sunrise Saturday, but additional advisories could be issued if cold air lingers into the weekend.
