Mount Clemens, MI – A Macomb County man has been arrested following an alleged confrontation involving threats toward a U.S. mail carrier earlier this week.

According to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Tuesday, May 4, 2026, to a home in the 100 block of Dickinson Street in Mount Clemens after reports of a disturbance. Authorities say a 34-year-old mail carrier had asked a resident to secure a dog to safely complete a delivery.

Investigators allege the resident, identified as Michael Sowards, 49, of Mount Clemens, responded by directing racial slurs at the carrier and threatening to retrieve an AR-15-style rifle. Deputies arrived and took Sowards into custody without incident.

According to officials, a search of the home led to the recovery of several weapons, including an AR-style rifle chambered in 7.62x39mm, loaded magazines, a CO2-powered pellet pistol, and multiple pellet rifles.

Sowards was arraigned in 41B District Court in Clinton Township on multiple charges, including possession of firearms and ammunition by a prohibited person, as well as additional felony weapons charges. Bond was set at $100,000 cash/surety, and he remains in custody at the Macomb County Jail.

Authorities say the case remains under investigation. Sowards is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
