Goodland, Kansas – A significant late-season freeze is expected to sweep across the Tri-State region, threatening early-season crops just as spring growth accelerates.

According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, a Freeze Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Saturday morning for northwest Kansas, northeast Colorado, and southwest Nebraska. Temperatures could fall as low as 20 degrees, cold enough to cause widespread damage to vegetation.

Communities including Goodland, Colby, McCook, Burlington, and Wray are all within the watch area. The coldest conditions are expected during the pre-dawn hours Saturday, when clear skies and light winds allow temperatures to drop rapidly across the High Plains.

This freeze carries added risk because the growing season has started earlier than normal—by as much as two to four weeks—leaving crops and plants more vulnerable than usual.

Residents and agricultural producers should act now to protect plants, cover crops, and insulate outdoor plumbing. Even a short period at these temperatures can cause significant losses.

Conditions are expected to improve after sunrise Saturday, but officials warn additional cold weather alerts may follow if the pattern persists.
