Baraboo, WI – Drivers across Sauk County and surrounding areas are being urged to use extra caution this weekend as farm equipment returns to roadways during peak planting season.
According to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, tractors and other slow-moving agricultural vehicles are increasingly common on rural roads as farmers work fields across the region. Officials warn that these vehicles often travel at much lower speeds than typical traffic, creating potential hazards for impatient or distracted drivers.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that standard traffic laws still apply when approaching or passing farm equipment. Drivers are reminded not to pass in designated no-passing zones, on road shoulders, or into oncoming traffic lanes.
Authorities say safe driving practices—such as slowing down, maintaining distance, and waiting for clear visibility—are critical when sharing the road with large machinery. The advisory comes as warmer weather accelerates farming operations throughout southern Wisconsin.
Officials also highlighted the importance of recognizing that farm equipment may take up more space on narrow roads and can make wide turns, requiring additional awareness from motorists.
The reminder is part of ongoing seasonal safety messaging aimed at reducing crashes and ensuring both drivers and farmers can travel safely during busy agricultural periods.
Motorists traveling through rural areas this weekend are encouraged to remain alert and patient, especially during early morning and evening hours when farm activity is often highest.
