Clovis, N.M. – A tornado watch is in effect for seven counties across eastern New Mexico until 11 p.m. Friday, as powerful storms sweep through the region with the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers Curry, Eddy, Harding, Lea, Quay, Roosevelt, and Union counties. Thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes are expected to develop late Friday afternoon into the evening, especially along the Texas border and High Plains corridor.

Residents in Clovis, Portales, Hobbs, and Carlsbad should stay weather-aware as rotating supercells could trigger rapidly developing tornadoes. U.S. Highway 70 and U.S. 62/180 may see dangerous driving conditions through the evening. Emergency management officials urge residents to secure outdoor items and have a shelter plan ready.

This marks the most widespread tornado threat in eastern New Mexico so far this June, with atmospheric conditions resembling past severe outbreaks in 2019. The watch comes as part of a broader storm system impacting parts of West Texas and the Oklahoma Panhandle.

The tornado watch remains in effect until 11 p.m., and additional warnings may be issued as storms intensify. Stay tuned to local media and NOAA Weather Radio for updates.
