Concord, NH – New Hampshire officials are warning residents about a widespread scam involving fraudulent text messages posing as final notices from the state’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The messages falsely claim recipients have unpaid traffic violations and threaten enforcement actions beginning June 10 if payments are not submitted by Sunday. They mimic official communication and include a link with “nhgov” in an effort to appear legitimate.

According to the New Hampshire State Police and the NH DMV, the scam messages threaten vehicle registration suspensions, license revocation, toll service charges, and legal action. The texts prompt users to reply or click a suspicious link to resolve the alleged violations.

Officials stress that the New Hampshire DMV never sends text messages requesting payments. The only legitimate texts sent by the DMV are appointment reminders.

“We urge all residents to remain vigilant for scams and encourage anyone who feels unsure about a message from the DMV to contact our Customer Service line directly,” said DMV Director John Marasco.

Anyone who receives such a message is advised not to respond or provide any personal information. Victims of the scam, or those who suspect identity theft, should contact local law enforcement and file a report with the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov or by calling 1-877-438-4338.

The state urges the public to delete the message immediately and to spread awareness to prevent further victimization across New Hampshire communities.
