Johnson City, TN – A Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputy was seriously injured Sunday when another vehicle struck his marked patrol SUV from behind while he was directing traffic on North Roan Street, authorities said.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy was working a traffic assignment Sunday when the crash occurred. Officials said the marked patrol vehicle had its blue emergency lights activated when it was struck from behind.
The sheriff’s office said the deputy suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. He was diagnosed with a concussion and is expected to remain hospitalized overnight for observation.
Two additional people who were inside the second vehicle were also transported to a hospital following the collision, according to the sheriff’s office. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
A photograph released by the sheriff’s office shows substantial damage to the rear driver’s side of the Washington County patrol SUV. Emergency personnel and additional law enforcement vehicles could be seen at the scene along North Roan Street.
Authorities did not immediately release the deputy’s name or identify the two other people who were injured. Additional details about what led to the vehicle striking the patrol SUV were also not immediately announced.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, according to the sheriff’s office. No information about possible citations or charges was released Sunday afternoon.
Drivers traveling through the North Roan Street area in Washington County and the Johnson City region should remain cautious around emergency scenes and move over when approaching stopped emergency vehicles.
