Bozeman, MT – A rare June snowstorm could drop up to 10 inches of snow across mountain regions in Montana and Idaho through Sunday, threatening travel safety and potentially bringing down trees and power lines.

According to the National Weather Service in Great Falls and Pocatello, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for elevated areas above 5,000 feet in Montana and 7,500 feet in Idaho. The alerts run from 6 p.m. Saturday through noon Sunday in Montana and until 6 p.m. Sunday in Idaho.

In Montana, 2 to 6 inches of wet snow could blanket mountain passes including Kings Hill Pass, Targhee Pass, and Bozeman Pass. Slick roads are expected across the Southern Rocky Mountain Front, Gallatin and Madison Mountains, and the Ruby Mountains. Travelers should avoid non-essential trips, particularly overnight.

Idaho’s Sun Valley Region and Lost River Range could see snow totals reach 10 inches at higher elevations. Recreation areas near Stanley, Challis, and Borah Peak may become inaccessible due to snow and ice.

Those heading into the backcountry should prepare for wet, wintry conditions with limited visibility and falling branches. Power outages are possible where heavy snow weighs on foliage.

Snow levels could dip as low as 5,000 feet in Montana, and 7,000 feet in Idaho, making even lower-elevation routes hazardous. More advisories may be issued if the system strengthens overnight.
