Springfield, MO – Snow continues to blanket southwest Missouri, creating treacherous driving conditions across major roadways, including I-44 and U.S. Highway 65. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that snow-covered roads will remain hazardous throughout today, and non-essential travel is strongly discouraged.

According to the NWS Springfield office, both a Winter Storm Warning and a Winter Weather Advisory are in effect until 6 p.m. Friday. With reports of numerous slide-offs and accidents across the region, local officials urge drivers to exercise caution if travel is unavoidable. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) advises drivers to reduce speed, leave extra stopping distance, and prepare for longer travel times.

The snowy conditions are expected to persist through Saturday, with temperatures remaining below freezing and additional light snow possible. For those planning weekend activities, Saturday’s high will hover near 30°F with icy roads lingering into Sunday morning. By Sunday afternoon, conditions should improve slightly as highs climb into the upper 30s, allowing some snow and ice to melt.

Looking ahead, the region will remain cold through the start of the week. Monday brings partly sunny skies with highs near 35°F, while Tuesday introduces another chance of light snow flurries.

Residents should stay updated on road conditions via MODOT’s traveler map and remain prepared for fluctuating weather. Avoid travel unless necessary, and ensure your vehicle is winter-ready with extra blankets, a flashlight, and emergency supplies.
