Minneapolis, MN – Extreme cold temperatures are set to grip Minnesota starting tonight, with wind chills dropping as low as 45 below zero in some areas through Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect from midnight tonight until 10 a.m. Monday for several counties, including Benton, Stearns, and Kandiyohi. A subsequent Extreme Cold Watch will take effect from late Monday night through Tuesday morning, with dangerously low wind chills expected statewide.
Residents in Minneapolis, St. Paul, St. Cloud, and surrounding regions should prepare for hazardous conditions. Frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes on exposed skin, making it critical to wear layers, including hats, gloves, and face masks, when venturing outside.
Travelers should exercise caution, as icy road conditions and reduced visibility due to frost may impact commutes. The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises checking road conditions before traveling. Temperatures this extreme are uncommon for mid-February, adding strain to heating systems and increasing the risk of cold-related emergencies.
Residents are urged to take necessary precautions, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors during this cold snap.
