Milwaukee, WI – Bridges and overpasses across southeast Wisconsin could turn slick between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Tuesday as light freezing drizzle develops while temperatures hover near 32 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, near-freezing temperatures paired with incoming precipitation may result in patchy light freezing rain or drizzle overnight into early Tuesday morning. The greatest window for slick travel is expected between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., with precipitation changing to plain rain after 6 a.m. as temperatures rise above freezing.

Milwaukee, Waukesha, Janesville and Madison sit within the zone most likely to see brief icing on untreated surfaces. Elevated roadways along Interstate 94, Interstate 43 and Interstate 41 are especially vulnerable, along with ramps connecting to I-894 and I-794. Areas closer to Lake Michigan may warm slightly faster, limiting ice duration near the immediate lakeshore.

Ice accumulation is expected to remain light, generally around 0.01 inch or less. Even a thin glaze can create hazardous conditions on bridges, overpasses and secondary roads during the early commute. Reduced traction may lead to spinouts if drivers brake suddenly.

Motorists heading out before sunrise Tuesday should reduce speed, allow extra following distance and use caution on untreated surfaces. Road crews may treat major highways, but neighborhood streets could remain slick until temperatures climb.

Conditions should steadily improve after 8 a.m. Tuesday as readings move above freezing and precipitation transitions to rain. Additional updates will be issued if colder air lingers longer than expected.
