Michigan – A calm, chilly start unfolds across Detroit this morning, with temperatures near 46 degrees under partly clear skies. The air feels quiet now, but changes are already lining up for later today.

Clouds increase through the afternoon, and highs top out near 40 degrees. Roads stay dry for much of the day, yet conditions deteriorate late. Snow becomes likely this evening, mainly between 8 p.m. and early Sunday morning.

Forecasters expect totals from a half inch to 2 inches across southeast Michigan. Locally higher amounts are possible toward the Thumb. Even light accumulation can create slick stretches on I-75, I-94, and the Lodge Freeway. Plan extra time if traveling late tonight or early Sunday.

Sunday turns sharply colder as March begins. Skies gradually clear, but highs struggle near 29 degrees. Morning lows dip into the teens. Any slushy pavement may refreeze before sunrise, creating isolated flash freezing concerns.

Monday rebounds slightly with sunshine and a high near 32 degrees. Another system approaches Monday night. A chance of snow develops after 1 a.m., possibly mixing with freezing rain toward daybreak Tuesday. That could bring slick spots for the Tuesday morning commute.

Tuesday trends messy, with rain or freezing rain likely before changing to plain rain. Highs reach near 40 degrees. Snow may mix back in Tuesday night as temperatures fall near 31.

Midweek moderates. Wednesday climbs to 46 degrees with a chance of rain, and warmer air builds late week. Highs may reach the mid-50s by Thursday and Friday as a broader warm pattern expands across much of the country.

While Arctic air presses across the northern tier, spring warmth grows elsewhere. Detroit sits on the battleground between late winter snow and incoming March mildness.
