Garrett County, MD – A significant winter storm is set to impact the region through Saturday morning, bringing heavy snow, gusty winds, and hazardous travel conditions. Local officials are urging residents to prepare for potential power outages and avoid unnecessary travel.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Garrett County and parts of Western Grant and Pendleton Counties in West Virginia are under a Winter Storm Warning until 10 a.m. Saturday. Snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are expected, with wind gusts reaching 50 mph. Visibility could drop to near zero in whiteout conditions, particularly along I-68 and US-40 west of Big Savage Mountain.
Roadways, including US-48 and US-33, are anticipated to become treacherous. Drivers should carry emergency supplies, such as flashlights, food, and water, if travel is unavoidable.
Snowfall will intensify this evening, with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible. High elevations will experience near-blizzard conditions, making outdoor activity extremely dangerous. Officials recommend staying indoors until conditions improve. If you must venture outside, wear layered clothing to protect against frostbite or hypothermia.
Looking ahead, snow showers will taper off Saturday morning, but icy roads may persist through the weekend. Power crews are on standby to address outages caused by falling tree limbs and high winds.
