Louisville, Kentucky – Residents across Kentucky and southern Indiana should use the next few days to prepare for the possibility of severe weather as a powerful storm system approaches the Ohio Valley later this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, a strong area of low pressure is forecast to track north of the Ohio Valley Wednesday night into Thursday. Forecasters say the system could bring strong winds and severe thunderstorms to portions of Kentucky and southern Indiana, though details regarding the exact threats will become clearer as the event draws closer.

Current outlooks indicate a risk area extending across much of central and eastern Kentucky on Wednesday and Thursday, including Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort, Elizabethtown, Bardstown and surrounding communities. Southern Indiana locations from Jeffersonville and New Albany eastward toward Madison could also be affected.

Across Kentucky – Indiana, gusty non-thunderstorm winds may develop ahead of the storm system beginning Wednesday and continue into Thursday. Those winds could create travel concerns for high-profile vehicles on Interstates 64, 65 and 71, even before thunderstorms arrive.

While specific severe weather hazards have not yet been finalized, the setup may support damaging winds, large hail and localized flooding depending on how the system evolves. The National Weather Service notes that confidence remains highest in an active weather period from Wednesday night through Thursday.

Residents should review severe weather safety plans now, especially if they have outdoor events, travel plans or work activities scheduled during the second half of the week. Make sure mobile devices are charged and weather alert notifications are enabled before the storm system arrives.

Forecast details, including the timing and severity of potential thunderstorms, are expected to become more refined over the next several days. Additional outlooks, watches and advisories could be issued as confidence increases regarding the late-week severe weather threat across Kentucky and southern Indiana.
