Will County, IL – Drivers across Illinois can expect to see more law enforcement on the roads this month as a statewide Speed Awareness Month campaign gets underway to reduce speeding-related crashes.

According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, the agency is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to increase traffic safety enforcement throughout July.

Officials said motorists should expect increased patrols looking for speeding drivers, along with other traffic violations, from July 7 through Aug. 1.

“Our roads are shared spaces and keeping them safe is a shared responsibility,” said Traffic Lt. Denny in the release. “When drivers choose to speed, they aren’t just endangering themselves, they are jeopardizing the safety of our families, neighbors, and children.”

Authorities say speeding reduces a driver’s ability to safely react to surrounding traffic, roadway hazards, and unexpected conditions, increasing the risk of serious crashes.

During the campaign, deputies will focus on enforcing posted speed limits, particularly on county roadways where many speed-related crashes occur. Drivers observed speeding can expect to receive citations.

Officials emphasized that the goal of the campaign is to encourage safer driving habits and reduce preventable injuries and fatalities on Illinois roads.

The enforcement effort is part of the “Speeding Catches Up With You” campaign and is funded through federal highway safety funds administered by IDOT. It also supports IDOT’s broader “It’s Not a Game” traffic safety initiative.

Motorists are encouraged to slow down, obey posted speed limits, eliminate distractions, and help make Illinois roadways safer for everyone.
