Des Moines, IA – Light snow is blanketing parts of central Iowa tonight, creating slick conditions on major roadways, including I-80 and Hwy 30. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously, especially near elevated surfaces, where light accumulations have been reported. Temperatures are expected to drop further as the snow lingers into Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snow will continue until around 4 a.m., with less than half an inch of additional accumulation expected. Winds gusting up to 24 mph may reduce visibility, particularly on exposed stretches of road. Travelers should prepare for delays, drive at reduced speeds, and maintain extra distance between vehicles.

Thursday will see temperatures reaching a high of just 17°F, with wind chills as low as -5°F throughout the morning. The skies are expected to clear by the afternoon, offering brief respite before another cold night with lows near 8°F.

Looking ahead, Friday promises partly sunny conditions and a slight warm-up, with highs near 29°F. By Saturday, temperatures could climb to 36°F, though mostly cloudy skies will prevail.

For those venturing out overnight or early Thursday, it’s crucial to stay updated on road conditions through the Iowa Department of Transportation and consider delaying travel if possible. Minor travel impacts are expected through the morning.

Be sure to check forecasts regularly as conditions may change, and prepare for freezing temperatures through the weekend.
