Indianapolis, Indiana – Snow is spreading south of I-74 before daybreak Monday, coating portions of I-465 and I-70 with slushy accumulation that could slow traffic by 6 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a mix of wintry precipitation has reached western portions of central Indiana, with light snow already observed near the I-74 corridor northwest of the city. The transition line will gradually sink south through early morning, leading to accumulating snow south of I-74 from 4 a.m. onward.
Most areas along and south of Interstate 70, including Indianapolis, Greenwood, Bloomington and Columbus, can expect around 1 to 2 inches of snow. Farther southwest toward Terre Haute and Spencer, a mix of rain, sleet and snow may briefly limit totals but could create slick conditions as temperatures hover near freezing.
Road impacts will develop first on bridges and elevated ramps along I-65, I-70 and I-465. Even minor sleet mixing in can compact under traffic, increasing stopping distances during the morning commute. Marion, Hendricks and Johnson counties may see steady snowfall rates during the peak drive time between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.
Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra following distance and prepare for sudden slowdowns. INDOT crews are monitoring primary routes, but untreated neighborhood roads may remain snow-covered into late morning.
Precipitation will taper from northwest to southeast late Monday morning, with gradual improvement expected by midday as road treatments take effect. Additional updates are possible if the snow band shifts farther south before 10 a.m. Monday.
