Colorado Springs, Colo. – Dry grass bends in the wind across southern Colorado today, but a more active weather pattern is already lining up behind it. Fire danger remains elevated now, while stronger thunderstorms could target the region as early as Monday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for portions of southern Colorado through this evening. Southwest winds between 15 and 25 mph, with gusts reaching 40 mph, combined with humidity values as low as 8 percent are creating critical fire weather conditions.

The immediate concern is fire spread across dry terrain near Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Walsenburg, Trinidad, and portions of the I-25 corridor. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged as any spark could spread rapidly under the current weather pattern.

By Sunday, conditions briefly calm with mostly sunny skies and temperatures near 90 degrees around Colorado Springs. However, meteorologists are now tracking a stronger weather-maker expected to influence eastern Colorado early next week.

According to the National Weather Service Hazardous Weather Outlook, thunderstorms developing Monday afternoon could become severe. Some storms across eastern Colorado may produce damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. Forecast discussions indicate hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter and wind gusts between 70 and 80 mph are possible with the strongest storms across the plains.

Colorado Springs itself carries a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms Monday, with breezy conditions and gusts approaching 35 mph. Drivers along Interstate 25, Highway 24, and Highway 83 should monitor changing conditions closely Monday afternoon and evening.

Additional daily thunderstorm chances continue through much of next week as moisture gradually increases across eastern Colorado.
