Palm Springs, CA – Dangerous heat continues across Southern California’s desert communities Friday as an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect, with temperatures expected to reach 115 degrees before conditions begin to improve Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, the warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. PDT Friday, July 10, for the Coachella Valley, San Diego County Deserts, and the San Gorgonio Pass near Banning.

Communities under the warning include Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Indio, Coachella, Cathedral City, La Quinta, Palm Desert Country, Borrego Springs, and nearby desert areas.

Forecasters expect afternoon highs to peak around 115 degrees, creating life-threatening conditions for anyone without adequate cooling or hydration. In the northern Coachella Valley, overnight lows will remain mostly in the 80s, limiting nighttime relief and increasing the cumulative health risks from prolonged heat exposure.

The National Weather Service warns that extreme heat significantly increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, and visitors participating in desert recreation.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to drink plenty of water, remain in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, and check on family members, neighbors, and others who may be vulnerable to the heat.

Officials also remind motorists never to leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where interior temperatures can become lethal within minutes, even with windows partially open.

With many travelers visiting the Coachella Valley and surrounding desert destinations during the summer, emergency managers urge everyone to take heat precautions seriously until temperatures begin to ease after sunset Friday.
