Charleston, SC – Dangerous heat and humidity are expected to create hazardous conditions across the Charleston area Friday, with “feels-like” temperatures climbing as high as 113 degrees under an Extreme Heat Warning.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. EDT Friday, July 10, for Charleston County and Tidal Berkeley County, including Charleston, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, and Daniel Island.

Forecasters say the combination of high temperatures and oppressive humidity will produce heat index values up to 113 degrees, creating conditions that can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

The greatest risk will occur during the afternoon and early evening hours when the heat index peaks. Older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions, and those working or exercising outside are especially vulnerable to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The National Weather Service advises residents to drink plenty of water, remain in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and check on relatives, neighbors, and others who may be at greater risk during the extreme heat.

Anyone who must be outdoors should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations, and monitor for symptoms of heat-related illness. If heat stroke is suspected, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

With the warning lasting through the evening commute, residents are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activities until temperatures begin to cool after sunset.
