Wichita, Kan. – Darkening skies and building humidity could quickly replace today’s calm conditions as a powerful storm complex pushes toward south-central Kansas. The next several hours may bring the most active weather Wichita has seen in days.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a complex of thunderstorms is expected to track out of northwest Kansas and southern Nebraska, affecting much of central, east-central, south-central, and southeast Kansas through Sunday morning. The strongest storms may produce wind gusts between 60 and 80 mph, ping pong ball-sized hail, torrential rainfall, and localized flooding.
As of late Sunday morning, Wichita remains relatively quiet with temperatures climbing toward 90 degrees. However, meteorologists are closely monitoring developing storms upstream that could organize and intensify before reaching Sedgwick County later in the day and tonight.
Travelers along Interstate 135, the Kansas Turnpike, U.S. 54, and Highway 400 should remain weather-aware. Heavy rain could reduce visibility quickly, while strong wind gusts may create hazardous conditions for high-profile vehicles. Plan extra travel time if heading out this evening.
According to the Hazardous Weather Outlook, storms may linger into Sunday morning across eastern Kansas before additional development becomes possible later Sunday afternoon and evening. The strongest storms could again bring damaging winds, flooding concerns, and large hail.
Looking ahead, storm chances continue periodically through much of the workweek. Tuesday through Friday may feature additional rounds of thunderstorms, with some capable of reaching severe limits depending on storm track and available moisture.
The broader national pattern continues to support severe weather across parts of the Plains and Midwest, keeping Kansas in an active corridor for storm development through the coming week.
