Flagstaff, Ariz. – Wisps of smoke drift across the high country while afternoon winds pick up speed, creating a changing weather picture across northern Arizona. Drivers may notice hazier skies at times today, especially near open terrain and forested areas around the Flagstaff region.

According to the National Weather Service, patchy smoke is expected through portions of the day before skies clear tonight. Temperatures will climb into the mid-80s Sunday, then continue rising through early next week. Highs are projected to reach 88 degrees Monday and around 91 degrees Tuesday.

The combination of dry air, sunshine, and gusty southwest winds creates elevated fire-weather concerns across parts of northern Arizona. Wind gusts could approach 29 mph during the afternoon, especially along exposed ridges and open stretches of Interstate 40 and Interstate 17.

Travelers heading toward the Grand Canyon, Williams, Sedona, or the Mogollon Rim should remain alert for occasional visibility reductions where smoke lingers. Conditions are not expected to become widespread, but localized impacts remain possible.

For now, the primary story is the warming trend. Flagstaff’s cooler mountain climate will still offer relief compared to lower deserts, but temperatures are running above average for late June. Outdoor recreation conditions remain favorable during the morning hours before the warmest part of the afternoon arrives.

Meteorologists are also tracking a small increase in moisture by midweek. A slight chance of thunderstorms develops Wednesday and continues into Thursday. Severe weather is not anticipated, but lightning and brief gusty winds could accompany any storm that forms.

Long-range outlooks continue signaling above-normal temperatures across much of Arizona heading into late June, while early monsoon signals remain limited.
