Albuquerque, N.M. – Heat shimmers above Interstate 25 and the Rio Grande Valley as central New Mexico heads into another stretch of intense summer weather. The air remains dry, the skies largely cloud-free, and temperatures are climbing toward their hottest levels of the week.

According to the National Weather Service, Albuquerque is expected to reach around 98 degrees Sunday afternoon before temperatures push back toward 99 degrees Monday and peak near 101 degrees Tuesday. Sunshine dominates the pattern, while overnight lows only fall into the 60s.

The developing heat arrives as much of the western United States remains under a broader ridge of high pressure. While severe storms and flash flooding are expected across portions of the Plains and Midwest, New Mexico stays on the hotter and drier side of the national weather pattern.

By late morning and through the afternoon, sidewalks, parking lots, and vehicle interiors will heat rapidly. Drivers along I-25, I-40, Paseo del Norte, and Coors Boulevard should prepare for extended exposure to temperatures approaching triple digits.

Plan outdoor activities before midday when possible. Drink water frequently and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations. Gardeners, hikers, and construction crews will want to monitor heat exposure closely.

Meteorologists are also watching for a subtle increase in moisture later in the week. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms returns Wednesday night and Thursday. Severe weather is not expected at this time, but isolated lightning and brief downpours could develop.

Looking farther ahead, above-normal temperatures appear likely across much of New Mexico into the 6-to-10-day period. Summer heat remains the dominant story heading into the final full week of June.
