Lamar, Colo. – A tornado watch is now in effect for seven counties across eastern Colorado through 10 p.m. Wednesday, as strong storms take aim at the High Plains region.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 342 was issued at 2:15 p.m. CDT. The watch includes Baca, Bent, Cheyene, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Prowers, and Yuma counties, where conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and damaging wind gusts through the evening.
Communities along U.S. Highways 50 and 385—including Lamar, Eads, Burlington, and Wray—should stay weather aware as storms intensify. Residents are urged to monitor alerts, secure outdoor items, and identify their nearest storm shelter. Power outages and hail are also possible, especially in rural areas with limited infrastructure.
This marks one of the season’s more widespread tornado watches for Colorado’s Eastern Plains, a region prone to severe weather this time of year. Emergency managers recommend having flashlights ready, charging mobile devices, and avoiding travel after sunset.
The tornado watch remains in effect until 10 p.m., with further updates or warnings expected as storms evolve.
