Putnam County, FL – A countywide burn ban is now in effect across unincorporated areas of Putnam County as officials respond to heightened wildfire danger fueled by dry conditions.

According to the Putnam County Sheriffโ€™s Office, the emergency order was issued Tuesday by the Putnam County Board of County Commissioners, declaring a local state of emergency and immediately prohibiting open burning. Officials said the restrictions come as forest and brush fire risks continue to rise across the region.

The order bans a wide range of activities that could ignite fires, including the use and sale of fireworks and flares, burning debris or trash, and parking vehicles with catalytic converters in grassy areas. Residents are also prohibited from discarding matches, cigarettes, or other combustible materials from vehicles.

Authorities noted that limited exceptions remain in place. Outdoor grills used for food preparation are still permitted, along with certain commercial land-clearing operations that have received proper approval and include on-site fire suppression measures.

The emergency declaration is intended to protect residents, property, and natural resources during a period of increased vulnerability. Officials emphasized that even small sparks could quickly spread under current conditions, putting homes and wooded areas at risk.

The burn ban is set to remain in effect for seven days but may be extended if dry weather persists or fire conditions worsen. Law enforcement officials said violations of the order are subject to enforcement under Florida law.

Residents are urged to follow all restrictions and exercise extreme caution to help prevent accidental fires during this critical period.
