Denver, CO – Colorado skywatchers are in for a treat this weekend as the 2024 Perseids meteor shower peaks. From the night of August 11 through the early hours of August 12, up to 100 meteors per hour could light up the night sky, with the possibility of seeing one meteor per minute in some areas. The Perseids, which originate from the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, have been visible since mid-July, but the peak nights promise the most breathtaking show.
Even with a 53% waxing moon, the best viewing will occur after the moon sets, leaving the skies dark and perfect for meteor watching. To maximize your experience, consider heading to dark-sky locations like Rocky Mountain National Park, Great Sand Dunes National Park, or even just outside of Denver in the mountains.
Make sure to bring warm clothing, a comfortable chair or blanket, and perhaps some hot drinks to stay cozy during the night.
