Columbia, SC – South Carolinians are in for a celestial show this weekend as the 2024 Perseids meteor shower peaks. From the night of August 11 through the early hours of August 12, the Perseids could produce up to 100 meteors per hour, with the potential to see one meteor per minute in ideal conditions. This meteor shower, which originates from the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, has been active since mid-July, but the peak nights are when the real show begins.

Despite the presence of a 53% waxing moon, the best viewing will be after the moon sets, leaving the skies dark for optimal meteor watching. For the best experience, consider heading to dark-sky locations like Congaree National Park, the Blue Ridge Mountains, or the Lowcountry beaches.

Be sure to dress warmly, bring a comfortable blanket or chair, and perhaps a thermos of your favorite hot drink. Gather friends and family to share the experience under the stars. With clear skies, you could see up to 100 meteors per hour, making this a night you won’t want to miss!
