St. Louis, MO – Missourians, prepare for an exciting night of stargazing as the 2024 Perseids meteor shower peaks this weekend. From the night of August 11 through the early morning of August 12, the Perseids could produce up to 100 meteors per hour, with the potential to see one meteor per minute in ideal conditions. This meteor shower, originating from the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, has been active since mid-July, but the peak nights promise the most dazzling display.
Even though the 53% waxing moon may light up the sky, the best viewing will occur after the moon sets, providing darker skies for better meteor spotting. For optimal viewing, consider heading to dark-sky areas such as the Mark Twain National Forest, the Ozarks, or even rural areas outside of Kansas City or St. Louis.
Don’t forget to bring along warm clothes, a blanket, and maybe some snacks to keep you comfortable during the night. Gathering friends and family will only enhance the experience. With clear skies, you might see up to 100 meteors per hour—an event not to be missed!
