Champaign, Illinois – Slick spots across east central Illinois will improve by midafternoon Monday as temperatures climb into the upper 40s, clearing slushy stretches along I-57 and I-74 after a wintry start.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, lingering snow and a light wintry mix early Monday will taper from west to east through the morning. As readings rise into the 40s this afternoon, untreated roads should transition from slushy to mainly wet. Drivers along I-72 and rural routes in Champaign, Vermilion and Douglas counties should remain cautious during the early commute while pavement temperatures recover.

Rain spreads back into central Illinois late Monday night, with widespread showers expected Tuesday. Highs Tuesday will reach the upper 40s to lower 60s, depending on location. A few thunderstorms are possible Tuesday night, especially near and south of I-70, as moisture increases across the region.

The midweek warmup becomes more noticeable Wednesday, with highs pushing into the upper 60s in some communities. Periodic showers and storms remain possible through Thursday, keeping roadways along I-55, I-57 and I-72 wet during peak travel times.

By Friday, temperatures could surge into the low to mid-70s, marking a dramatic shift from the early-week chill. While severe weather is not guaranteed, residents should monitor daily updates as multiple rounds of rain and storms move through.

Motorists should allow extra braking distance on wet pavement and watch for ponding during heavier downpours. Additional advisories may be issued if stronger storms develop later this week.
