Binghamton, New York – A quick burst of overnight snow could leave up to 2 inches on I-81 before 7 a.m. Sunday, setting up slick conditions for early travelers across the Southern Tier and Central New York.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a fast-moving system will bring light snow late tonight through Sunday morning. Most communities, including Binghamton, Ithaca and Elmira, are expected to pick up a fresh coating to 2 inches before precipitation tapers off shortly after daybreak.

Snow will develop after midnight and overspread areas along and east of I-81, including Cortland, Norwich and Oneonta. In Syracuse and along I-90, similar totals are anticipated, with steady light snow briefly reducing visibility to under a mile at times.

Road temperatures will fall into the 20s overnight, allowing snow to accumulate on untreated pavement. Bridges and overpasses along Route 17 and I-88 could become snow covered within a short time, especially during steadier bursts toward sunrise.

By late Sunday morning, snow will wind down from west to east, and some sunshine may return during the afternoon. However, colder air behind the system will keep highs in the 20s and low 30s through Monday, limiting rapid melting.

Drivers heading out early Sunday should allow extra travel time, reduce speed and check 511NY for updated road conditions. Additional statements may be issued if snowfall rates increase overnight or totals trend higher across Central New York.
