Fairbanks, Alaska – Drivers along the Dalton Highway could face treacherous travel starting late Thursday as a winter storm dumps up to a foot of snow across Alaska’s Central Brooks Range.
According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Saturday, with snow totals of 6 to 12 inches expected between Anaktuvuk and Atigun Passes. The heaviest snowfall will likely concentrate just south of Anaktuvuk Pass and east toward Atigun Pass.
Travel along Dalton Highway Mileposts 232 to 322 may become very difficult, especially overnight Thursday into Friday. The snow is expected to intensify overnight and remain steady through Friday evening. The area south of Toolik Lake will see the brunt of the storm, with poor visibility and slick road conditions.
Motorists should delay non-essential travel, keep emergency supplies in vehicles, and monitor 511 for road updates. Snow chains or traction devices may be needed for high-elevation routes.
Another snow system is projected to arrive Sunday into Monday, potentially adding several more inches on top of this storm’s totals.
Warnings remain in effect through early Saturday, with updates expected as conditions evolve.
