Charleston, W.Va. – Residents across West Virginia may want to limit time outdoors Thursday as Canadian wildfire smoke pushes air pollution to unhealthy levels for sensitive groups.

According to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, a Code Orange Air Quality Alert remains in effect until 10 p.m. due to elevated levels of fine particulate matter drifting southward. This advisory applies statewide, including major cities like Huntington, Charleston, Parkersburg, Morgantown, Beckley, and Martinsburg.

Air Quality Index (AQI) levels are expected to fluctuate between 101 and 150, considered unhealthy for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions. Visibility may be reduced in some areas, and people with asthma or chronic bronchitis are urged to stay indoors and run air purifiers if available.

The smoke has impacted both western and eastern counties—from Wayne and Cabell to Jefferson and Berkeley—and includes the Greenbrier Valley and Eastern Panhandle. Outdoor school activities, sports, and events may need adjustment or cancellation depending on local air levels.

While this advisory is set to expire by late evening, officials caution that additional alerts are possible if smoke persists into Friday. Check airnow.gov for live updates.
