Juneau, Alaska – Bursts of heavy snow and gusty winds are reducing visibility and disrupting travel across Southeast Alaska this morning, with conditions expected to persist through early Tuesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Tuesday for much of the central and northern Panhandle, including Juneau, Sitka, Yakutat, and Glacier Bay. Snowfall totals between 3 and 5 inches are expected in heavier bands, while winds may gust up to 40 mph, creating blowing snow and rapidly changing visibility.
Communities such as Juneau, Gustavus, and Hoonah could see sudden bursts of heavier snow as bands move through, leading to uneven accumulations and slick road conditions. Air travel may also face delays due to reduced visibility and shifting snow intensity.
Additional advisories remain in place across Skagway, Haines, and Prince of Wales Island, where 2 to 4 inches of snow could create hazardous travel on roads like the Klondike Highway near White Pass.
Residents are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check Alaska 511 for current conditions. Snow showers will remain scattered through midweek, and advisories could be upgraded if heavier bands persist over the same areas.
