Des Moines, Iowa — Breezy conditions are building across central Iowa Saturday afternoon, with west-southwest wind gusts up to 20 mph between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. potentially pushing debris onto roads and impacting travel in Des Moines, Ames, Ankeny, Marshalltown and Fort Dodge.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, dry conditions will hold through Saturday before a chance of scattered showers develops Sunday morning, mainly across northeast Iowa.
This is part of a broader system transitioning Iowa from a quiet weekend into a more active midweek pattern, with increasing moisture and storm chances.
Light showers Sunday between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. may briefly dampen roads along I-80 and nearby routes, especially on bridges and low-lying stretches where moisture lingers. By Tuesday, storm chances increase to 40 to 60 percent across southern Iowa, with heavier rain capable of quickly pooling on flood-prone intersections and underpasses, particularly in Ottumwa and surrounding areas.
Drivers should maintain control in gusty winds today and slow down on wet roads during showers, while residents should monitor midweek forecasts as storm chances increase.
The next significant impact window will occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday, when storms may bring the greatest risk of travel disruption across southern Iowa.
