Baltimore, MD – A frost advisory is in effect early Tuesday morning, May 12, across parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, with temperatures expected to dip into the mid-30s.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, the advisory runs from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday and includes areas such as Allegany County in Maryland, Shenandoah, Rockingham, and Augusta counties in Virginia, and portions of eastern West Virginia including Hardy, Hampshire, and Morgan counties.

Cool and calm overnight conditions will allow temperatures to fall low enough for frost formation, particularly in valleys and higher elevations before sunrise.

The primary concern is damage to sensitive outdoor vegetation. Plants left uncovered overnight could be harmed or killed as temperatures approach the mid-30s for several hours.

Residents are urged to take precautions late Monday night by covering tender plants or bringing them indoors if possible. Gardeners and agricultural interests should act ahead of the early morning chill.

Temperatures are expected to rise after sunrise Tuesday, ending the frost threat by mid-morning.

This advisory highlights the continued risk of frost in Appalachian and valley regions, even as surrounding areas experience warmer spring weather.
