Alachua County, FL – The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office is marking a somber anniversary today, remembering the death of Burley Junior Barnett. On September 20, 1974, Barnett was discovered in his vehicle at a southbound rest area on Interstate 75. He had died as a result of a fatal head injury.

More than four decades later, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unsolved. Sheriff's officials emphasize their commitment to finding answers in the case, seeking both justice for the victim and closure for those who knew him. Investigators believe someone in the community may hold the key to resolving this long-standing mystery.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward. Those with knowledge can contact Sergeant M. Cooper directly at mbcooper@acso.us or 352-367-4163. Additionally, tips can be provided to Crime Stoppers of North Central Florida at 352-372-STOP (7867). All callers have the option to remain anonymous.
