Miami, Florida – Fall begins Tuesday with heavy rain threatening South Florida, where localized totals of 5 to 7 inches could trigger flooding in east coast metros.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected from about 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Rain falling on areas already soaked Monday could increase the potential for flooding.
The Weather Prediction Center has placed all of South Florida under a marginal risk for excessive rainfall. The Weather Service said its confidence in flooding remains low, but localized impacts are possible.
Most South Florida communities are expected to receive 1 to 2 inches of rain. Localized totals of 3 to 5 inches are possible, while parts of the east coast metropolitan corridor could receive isolated amounts of 5 to 7 inches.
Tuesday's rain chances are high across the region. The Weather Service graphic shows a 72% chance in Miami, 80% in Boca Raton, 82% in West Palm Beach and 74% around Jupiter. Fort Lauderdale has an 80% chance, while Naples reaches 77%.
Periods of heavy rain could cause localized urban flooding, particularly in low lying areas and locations with poor drainage. Drivers should use extra caution where water collects and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads.
The threat arrives on the first day of astronomical fall, but South Florida's immediate concern is additional heavy rainfall rather than cooler temperatures.
Residents should monitor conditions through the afternoon and evening, particularly across Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. The main window for showers and thunderstorms runs from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the highest localized rainfall totals possible along the east coast metro areas.
