Miami, Florida – More storms could trigger urban flooding Wednesday after days of rain, with Miami facing a 72% chance of precipitation.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop across much of South Florida. A marginal risk for excessive rainfall covers most of the region, including the east coast metro area.
Rain chances range from 60% to 80% across much of South Florida, with some locations higher. Everglades City has an 84% chance, West Palm Beach 82%, Fort Lauderdale 80% and Naples 77%. Miami's probability is 72%, while Homestead is at 63%.
Widespread rainfall totals are expected to remain below 2 inches. However, isolated pockets of heavier rain could produce additional urban flooding, particularly where several inches have already fallen during recent rounds of rain.
The Weather Service highlighted Miami Dade and Broward counties as areas where saturated locations could flood more quickly. Slow moving showers and thunderstorms pose the primary concern, especially in low lying, poorly drained and urban areas.
Drivers should avoid flooded streets and use alternate routes when water covers a roadway. Conditions can vary significantly across the metro because thunderstorms may produce locally heavier rainfall.
Abundant tropical moisture remains over South Florida, while a nearby low level and upper level disturbance supports continued shower and thunderstorm development.
The urban flood threat continues Wednesday, with additional flooding possible where storms repeatedly cross saturated neighborhoods. Residents should monitor conditions through the day, particularly across Miami Dade and Broward counties.
