Springfield, IL – As temperatures drop, Illinois State Police urge parents to prioritize car seat safety to keep children safe. Bulky winter clothing, like coats and snowsuits, can interfere with the proper fit of a car seat harness, posing serious risks in the event of a crash.
According to the Illinois State Police, harness straps should fit snugly against a child’s chest. Parents are encouraged to use thin, layered clothing under the harness and place blankets or coats over the straps once the child is secured.
Officials also recommend getting an early start when traveling during winter mornings to allow for cautious driving in icy conditions. Packing an emergency bag with blankets, gloves, and snacks is another vital step to prepare for unexpected delays.
For more guidance, parents can visit the Illinois State Police website or consult resources provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
