Washington – The morning starts comfortably cool, but don’t let the fresh air fool you. Sunshine quickly takes over across eastern Washington, sending temperatures soaring into the mid-90s this afternoon as another stretch of intense summer heat settles over Spokane. The hottest weather is still ahead, with the peak arriving by Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, skies will gradually clear through late morning before sunshine dominates the afternoon. High temperatures reach 95°F today, climb to 96°F Tuesday, and peak near 97°F Wednesday as dry conditions persist across much of the Inland Northwest.

The prolonged warmth increases heat stress for anyone working or exercising outdoors during the afternoon. Roads including Interstate 90, U.S. Highway 2, U.S. 195, and State Route 290 will remain dry, but pavement temperatures can become significantly hotter than the air, creating uncomfortable conditions for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Residents should stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, and schedule outdoor activities during the cooler morning or evening hours whenever possible. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a short time.

Nationally, meteorologists continue tracking severe thunderstorms and flash flooding across parts of the Plains and Midwest, while the West remains under widespread summer heat. Eastern Washington escapes the severe weather, but persistent warmth remains the primary concern through midweek.

Conditions begin to ease slightly later in the week. A 20 percent chance of showers arrives Wednesday night and again Thursday, offering only limited cooling before sunshine returns heading into Friday.
