Washington, D.C. – Hundreds of thousands of Kobalt yard power tools sold nationwide are being recalled after officials warned that charging certain USB-C lithium-ion batteries while they are installed in the tools can create a serious fire hazard.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Greenworks Tools is recalling about 554,780 Kobalt 24V and 48V outdoor power tools equipped with specific USB-C rechargeable batteries. The recall, announced Thursday, July 9, 2026, affects select trimmers, blowers, lawn mowers, chainsaws and pruning saws sold through Lowe’s stores and Lowes.com.
The CPSC said charging the battery through its USB-C charging port while it remains inserted in the tool can cause the battery to short-circuit, potentially resulting in smoke, sparking or fire and creating a risk of serious injury.
Consumers are urged to immediately stop charging recalled batteries through the USB-C port while they are installed in the tool. Greenworks is offering free replacement batteries that do not include the USB-C charging feature. Consumers will also receive a charger adapter, updated product manual, warning label and prepaid shipping label to return the recalled battery.
According to the recall notice, Greenworks has received 34 reports of batteries producing smoke, sparking or catching fire while charging inside the tool. No injuries or property damage had been reported at the time of the announcement.
The recalled products were sold at Lowe’s stores nationwide and online at Lowes.com from January 2026 through May 2026 for prices ranging from $200 to $402.
Consumers can check model numbers listed in the official CPSC recall notice and register for a replacement through Greenworks’ product recall website or contact the company at 888-266-7096 for additional assistance.
