California – The cool morning breeze won’t last. Sunshine is quickly taking over Southern California, and a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat is building across Los Angeles as temperatures climb through the week. Inland neighborhoods and valley communities will feel the greatest impacts, with even hotter weather expected after today.
According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday, while an Extreme Heat Watch begins Tuesday morning and continues through Thursday evening for much of Los Angeles County’s valleys and inland communities. Afternoon highs today reach 85°F in downtown East Los Angeles before climbing to 89°F Tuesday and 95°F Wednesday. Valley temperatures could range from 95 to 105 degrees during the watch period.
The hottest conditions are expected across the San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, western San Fernando Valley, and inland portions of Los Angeles County. Monsoonal moisture may increase humidity, making the heat feel even more taxing despite generally dry skies.
Motorists on Interstate 5, Interstate 10, U.S. 101, Interstate 210, and State Route 118 should prepare for intense afternoon heat, especially if traveling without air conditioning. Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
Stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and check on older adults and neighbors without reliable cooling. Construction workers, hikers, and anyone spending extended time outdoors face the greatest risk of heat-related illness.
Nationally, dangerous heat continues across much of the West while severe thunderstorms and flash flooding remain active over parts of the Plains and Midwest. Southern California stays dry, but the prolonged heat will be the dominant weather story through midweek.
